Hair Extensions Aftercare

Last updated: October 2025

Welcome to your official aftercare guide from Finesse Hair & Beauty By Coco. With the right routine and products, your extensions will stay soft, glossy, and tangle-free for longer. Please read carefully — proper care is essential and forms part of our customer guidance.

GUIDANCE STEP 1

Before Installation

  • Wash your natural hair with a clarifying or anti-tap shampoo. Do not use conditioner before fitting.
  • Make sure your hair is completely dry and product-free before installation.
  • Avoid oils, serums, or leave-in conditioners prior to fitting — a clean base prevents slippage and ensures a secure hold.

GUIDANCE STEP 2

Colouring & Chemical Treatments

  • We do not recommend colouring, toning, perming, or chemically treating extensions.
  • Although our hair is 100% human, it no longer receives nutrients from the scalp and can be easily damaged by processing.
  • Any chemical treatment is done at the customer’s own risk and may void the guarantee. Blonde and ash tones require extra care and hydration, as lighter shades have undergone additional processing and naturally have a shorter lifespan.

GUIDANCE STEP 3

After Fitting (First 48 Hours)

  • Some tenderness on the scalp for a day or two is normal as your head adjusts to the added weight.
  • Avoid washing or heavy sweating for 48 hours to allow the bonds or tapes to fully set.
  • If tightness or discomfort continues beyond a few days, contact your stylist for a check-up.

Washing Routine

GUIDANCE STEP 4

  • Wash your hair 2–3 times per week using gentle, sulphate-free shampoo.
  • Before washing, detangle using a wide-tooth comb and separate the bonds or rows.
  • Always wash with your head upright (a shower is best) and smooth the shampoo downward — do not scrub or twist.
  • Apply conditioner only from mid-lengths to ends, avoiding the bond or sewn areas.
  • Pat dry gently — never rub the hair harshly with a towel.

Drying

GUIDANCE STEP 5

  • Apply a leave-in conditioning spray before detangling.
  • Mist a heat protectant through the mid-lengths and ends. Around the roots, use a light mist only — avoid saturating bonds or tapes.
  • Dry the bonds completely after every wash — damp bonds can weaken and cause shedding.
  • Blow-dry the bond/row area first on cool/low until fully dry.
  • Use a paddle or vented brush for drying; use a round brush on mid-lengths to ends only, keeping it away from bonds.
  • Hair tools should not exceed 185°C.

GUIDANCE STEP 6

Styling & Products

  • Heated tools such as straighteners, curlers, and tongs are safe with heat protection.
  • Use serums and sprays on the mid-lengths and ends only — avoid the bond area.
  • Avoid products that contain sulphates, alcohol, or protein, and do not use purple or silver toning shampoos.
  • Apply serums/sprays to mid-lengths and ends; keep products away from bonds or tapes.

GUIDANCE STEP 7

Brushing

  • Use a loop or extensions brush designed for hair extensions.
  • Brush gently twice a day, supporting the bonds with your other hand to reduce tension.
  • Some shedding is normal — everyone loses up to 100 hairs a day.

GUIDANCE STEP 8

Sleeping

  • Never sleep with damp hair — ensure the hair and bonds are completely dry.
  • Before bed, tie your hair in a loose plait or ponytail using a soft scrunchie.
  • Sleeping on a silk or satin pillowcase helps prevent friction, tangles, and dryness.

Day-to-Day Activities

GUIDANCE STEP 9

  • If using a sunbed, wrap your hair in a towel to prevent heat exposure from drying the bonds.
  • After gym sessions or sweating, gently cleanse and dry your scalp — never leave bonds damp.
  • Avoid prolonged humidity from saunas or steam rooms without drying your hair immediately after.

Swimming & Holidays

GUIDANCE STEP 10

We do not recommend swimming with extensions. Chlorine, saltwater, and UV rays can dry, fade, or damage hair and bonds.

If you do swim:

  • Tie your extensions into a braid or bun using a covered band.
  • Avoid submerging the bonded area where possible.
  • Rinse thoroughly in fresh water immediately after swimming.
  • Avoid brushing when soaking wet; detangle once towel-dried (around 80% dry), starting at the ends.
  • Finish with a light leave-in or protein spray for protection.

Maintenance & Refit

GUIDANCE STEP 11

  • Schedule a maintenance check every 4–6 weeks to review rows or bonds.
  • Do not wear extensions for longer than three months without removal or refit — hair growth can cause tangling near the roots.
  • Regular check-ups help ensure healthy growth and prevent matting or slippage.
  • Typical timelines: tapes 6–8 weeks; wefts/microrings 6–10 weeks, depending on growth and care.

Recommended Aftercare Products

GUIDANCE STEP 12

For best results, use Finesse Hair & Beauty By Coco approved products:

  • Clarifying shampoo (before fitting)
  • Hydrating shampoo and conditioner (mid-lengths to ends)
  • Leave-in conditioning spray
  • Heat protectant spray
  • Hair oil or serum for ends only

Avoid heavy oils, high-alcohol sprays, purple shampoos, or silicone-rich products.

GUIDANCE STEP 13

Troubleshooting & Support

  • Scalp tenderness: Normal for the first few days — if it lasts longer, have your stylist check the tension.
  • Dryness or frizz: Reduce heat use and increase hydration.
  • Slippage or shedding: Check that you’re fully drying the bonds and not applying conditioner near attachments.

GUIDANCE STEP 14

Quality Assessment & Testing

If you believe your extensions are faulty:

  • Contact us within 14 days of delivery for authorisation before returning.
  • Testing may take 10–15 working days after receipt.
  • If tests show any chemical processing (dye, bleach, purple shampoo, toner, or perm), refunds or exchanges will not be issued.
  • If confirmed as faulty, we’ll provide an appropriate remedy and cover return postage.

GUIDANCE STEP 15

Hair Extension Lifespan & Storage

  • Average wear life: 9–18 months depending on care, colour, and installation method.
  • When not in use, store clean and completely dry extensions in a silk bag or box.
  • Avoid leaving hair exposed to sunlight, humidity, or dust.
  • If reusing extensions, ensure old bonds are removed and hair is re-tipped or wefted before refit.
  • Gently detangle and apply a small amount of leave-in conditioner before storage to keep hair smooth.

GUIDANCE STEP 17

Long-Term Care & Maintenance Tips

Good habits help your extensions look salon-fresh for months.

  • Schedule professional maintenance every 4–6 weeks to tighten or realign rows.
  • Trim the ends regularly to prevent split or frayed tips.
  • Refresh your leave-in and serum routine to maintain shine and hydration.
  • Rotate your parting occasionally to reduce tension in one area.
  • If you notice slipping, matting, or uneven weight, book a check-up promptly.

GUIDANCE STEP 18

The DO's

  • Wash 2–3 times weekly and dry bonds completely.
  • Use heat protection and keep temperatures under 185°C.
  • Brush daily with an extensions brush.
  • Sleep with your hair in a loose plait on a silk pillowcase.
  • Use only approved aftercare products.

GUIDANCE STEP 19

The DONT'S

  • Use toning or purple shampoos.
  • Apply oil or conditioner directly onto bonds.
  • Swim or expose hair to chlorine or saltwater without protection.
  • Leave hair damp overnight or allow bonds to stay wet.
  • Use sulphate or alcohol-based products.

Final Care Reminder

Your extensions are an investment in confidence and style.

With gentle handling, quality products, and regular maintenance, they’ll stay soft, smooth, and luxurious for months to come.
